Contact areas

If nothing else, putting your contact information at the bottom of every page provides readers with an opportunity to ask a question and learn more. Even when there isn’t a strong call to action on a page, contact information steps into that role.

Tips for contact areas:

• Keep it short: list only critical information. Avoid listing multiple addresses or phone numbers because it makes the information harder to use.
• Go easy on icons. Icons draw the eye, true, but a good concise contact area will only use 3-4 icons — including buttons.
• Make it easy for your readers. If they’re more likely to email, put email before the phone number. If you encourage walk-ins, put your location first.

Alternative footer treatments

There can be other, more intuitive ways to close a page, depending on the page. A page that describes a IT service, for example, might conclude with a button to request that service. A page dedicated to community partnerships might use the people tool to include a person’s photo and contact information. The important thing to remember is this: someone came to your page and read all the way to the bottom — they’re interested in what you’ve had to say, so make it easy for them to take the next step.
