Make numbers stand out and give them immediate meaning.
Metrics are a combination of a large, stylized number and a smaller (often italicized) font for context. Using a metric block is a way to turn a normally plain data point or statistic into a visual mini-story that readers can notice and remember in just a few seconds.
There are no restrictions on metrics, but a grid or boxout is the most common way to house them. It’s good practice to place metrics near relevant content, although they can work on their own in cases where the numbers are self-explanatory. A good metric will draw the reader’s eye while supporting the main call to action on a page.
Metrics work well for:
- statistics
- rankings
- totals
- percentages
- outcomes
use metrics to emphasize:
- impact
- progress
- scale
- selectivity
