Clark University and the School of Business have appointed Thomas A. Herald as Regional Director of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Clark University. A longtime adjunct faculty member for Clark and the SBDC, in this new role he will lead the center’s initiatives to guide and support aspiring and existing small business owners and students while contributing to the region’s broader business ecosystem.
“I have the greatest job ever. Every day I get to coach entrepreneurs and students to help them see their business aspirations come to fruition,” Herald said. “I am excited to work with a talented team of advisors and professionals across Central Massachusetts to keep this region of the Commonwealth a top-tier location for innovative and sustainable business.”
The Massachusetts Small Business Development Center Network comprises six regional offices and several specialty centers located throughout Massachusetts. SBDC business advisors foster the start, growth, and sustainability of small businesses by providing high-quality, in-depth advising, training, and capital access and connecting clients to the community, including chambers of commerce, community development corporations, and economic development organizations.
Known as an exceptional, results-oriented leader, Herald previously served the SBDC as senior business advisor since 2020, where he helped hundreds of small businesses improve their sales, profits, and performance. He has also been an adjunct faculty member for the School of Business for nearly three years.
Dr. David Jordan, Interim Dean of the School of Business, added, “Tom has been remarkable in his efforts supporting small businesses in Central Massachusetts and the many students he has mentored. We are thrilled that he accepted this new role and look forward to seeing the SBDC expand its connections and impact in the community.”
With Herald’s appointment, the SBDC at Clark has also transitioned back under the purview of the School of Business. The move provides a more seamless way for School of Business students to participate in the support services offered by the SBDC to local businesses and entrepreneurs throughout Central Massachusetts via internships and project work.
Herald is a two-time CEO, former officer in the United States Air Force, served on numerous non-profit organization boards, and is currently the Chairman for Clear Path for Veterans New England. He holds an MBA from the University of West Florida and a bachelors degree from Indiana University.
