Data Science
What courses should I take in my first year to see if this is the right major for me?
In order for interested students to test out this major, we recommend that students take one of the classes that are required as a pre-requisite for follow up classes as well as testing a course in one of the required tracks. CSCI 120 would be the best choice to start with, as well as MATH 120 and one of the 100 level track requirements.
If you already have credit for any of these classes, you can jump into the next level classes of MATH 121 and CSCI 121
Are there any courses I am required or strongly encouraged to take in my first semester if I know I want to declare this major? Do any AP credits count for these requirements?
CSCI 120 (or CSCI 121 if you already have credit for CSCI 120) are the best courses to take in your first semester to set you on track for this major.
You can get credit for MATH 120 if you score high enough on the Calculus AB AP exam, or you can get credit for both MATH 120 and MATH 121 (half unit each) if you score high enough on the Calculus BC AP exam. Additionally, depending on the track you choose with the Data Science major, there may be other AP exams that will count for credit.
What is the latest semester that I can start this major and still graduate in four years?
This major requires 15 courses of credit so you could declare this major in the last semester of Sophomore year and be fine, so long as you have completed enough Core requirements.
I am interested in many different subjects. What other majors, minors, or concentrations go well with this major?
The Data Science major pairs well with a variety of Clark’s other programs. If you are choosing a specific track for the major, often students will tie in the connected minor program to expand their expertise.
What else do you want incoming first year students to know about this major?
As the world continues to become more and more technologically advanced and interconnected, Data Science is a central component that can impact all sorts of careers. Students majoring in data science will be able to find opportunities across all sectors and around the world.
If I want to declare this as a major, who should I talk to and where do I go?
