Computer Science

What courses should I take in my first year to see if this is the right major for me?

When thinking about how to test out if the Computer Science major is right for you, it is important to consider your previous level of experience in programming. If you have a moderate level of experience in programming. If you have a moderate level of experience, we recommend that you take CSCI 120 in your first year. For those on the various ends of experience in programming, from those who have barely tried programming to those who are well versed, we recommend that you take either CSCI 103 or CSCI 124 respectively. It is also important to note that a strong math background is important to Computer Science, so taking either MATH 120 or MATH 121 in your first year is highly recommended.

Are there any courses I am required or strongly encouraged to take in my first semester if I know I want to declare this major? Do any AP credits count for these requirements?

Taking the above noted courses based upon your level of experience will be beneficial to your first year. Both of the Calculus AP exams (so long as you score a 4 or a 5) can count towards the required classes in this major with Calculus AB taking the place of MATH 120 and Calculus BC counting for both MATH 120 and 121 (though they only count as a half unit each).

What is the latest semester that I can start this major and still graduate in four years?

Both second semester Sophomores and first semester Juniors have been able to declare in the past. But the best thing is to clear MATH 120, MATH 121, CSCI 120, CSCI 121 as soon as possible as that opens up access to several courses in the Computer Science prerequisite structure.

I am interested in many different subjects. What other majors, minors, or concentrations go well with this major?

The CS major is complemented by many of Clark’s other programs, including but not limited to the programs of: Math, Economics, Business, Game Design, any of the sciences, and Urban Studies.

What else do you want incoming first year students to know about this major?

Computer Science trains students in many skill sets important to industry as well as graduate school. Students have gone on from CS bachelors to Law School, Business School, MS/PHD’s in Computer Science, and several others. Our curriculum affords students several opportunities for meaningful experiential activities including research, project work, and many student club run activities.

If I want to declare this as a major, who should I talk to and where do I go?
