Chemistry
What courses should I take in my first year to see if this is the right major for me?
The introductory chemistry sequence of CHEM 101 in the Fall semester and CHEM 102 in the Spring semester is the best place to start.
Are there any courses I am required or strongly encouraged to take in my first semester if I know I want to declare this major? Do any AP credits count for these requirements?
CHEM 101/102 is the required starting point. AP credits can be applied to replace CHEM 101 should you receive a 4 or 5 on your AP Chemistry exam. Waiving of CHEM 102 is possible with an additional placement exam. Students would then be eligible for CHEM 131.
Physics and Calculus are strongly encouraged but not necessary in the first year, though they are required for the major. A second semester of math is required, but which course should be determined in consultation with a department advisor.
What is the latest semester that I can start this major and still graduate in four years?
The latest you can start your major in Chemistry is the first semester of your sophomore year as the major requires 14-15 courses to be completed, depending on the track you choose.
I am interested in many different subjects. What other majors, minors, or concentrations go well with this major?
Minors in BCMB, Physics, and Mathematics can mesh well with the Chemistry major.
What else do you want incoming first year students to know about this major?
While there are two tracks in the major, their impact on which chemistry courses you need to take does not manifest until your junior year, so you have time to make a commitment to a particular pathway. Research opportunities also exist for students who have declared this major as early as in their first year.
If I want to declare this as a major, who should I talk to and where do I go?
