Bomarzo: Keeping Doubt Alive

This exhibition positions Black abstraction as a field of resistance, experimentation, and coded language. Long mischaracterized as a retreat from politics, abstraction here emerges as a vernacular practice, deeply embedded in the cultural, historical, and sonic traditions of Black life. It is a space where meaning circulates obliquely—through rhythm, rupture, opacity, and improvisation—echoing the colloquial speech, call-and-response, and layered signifying practices that shape Black expression.

In my practice, the R.I.P. T-shirt has become a central site of this investigation, a vernacular form that radicalizes visibility, carries memory, and transforms grief into collective presence.

Photography, found snapshots, clothing, and infrastructure-based materials such as asphalt are not neutral supports but carriers of mourning, persistence, and resistance. They complicate permanence, holding memory in forms.

The Village

Artist statement

In 1940, the US Navy hired a contractor to build a new neighborhood in Kittery, Maine called Admiralty Village. The community of naval artisans and craftsmen who worked in the Portsmouth Navy yard was broken down in 225 double units and 150 single homes that were built in one year. The neighborhood was established to support a flourishing maritime endeavor during Wartime. Today, some of its residents are still part of the Naval industry in Kittery, though many units were sold to small families and individuals who make up the contemporary fabric of a humble community on the Maine Seacoast.

In the Spring of 2021, shortly after we became a family of three, we established our home in The Village. The daily routine of walking Raphaela in the stroller was also a way of getting familiar with the new neighborhood. That quickly became an almost daily routine of photographing. Everything.

This selection of 30 photographs is a chronicle of change, growth, amazement, and reflection. In the past two decades I have worked on many projects that have taken place on four continents, concerning mostly foreign societies and communities.

“The Village” is the closest to home I have ever worked.
