Who are you/What do you do?
My name is Annabel Romero Hernandez. I have a research-based practice. My primary medium is paper, and I aim to map all the invisible connections between science and culture in a visual language.
What are your career aspirations/what motivates you?
I would like to expand my current art practice to a more conceptual level, using an artistic focus to communicate scientific and cultural ideas. I also want to develop work that can be shown in galleries and museums.
How does the MFA in Visual Arts help you reach your objectives?
The Clark MFA program offers me a comprehensive academic background (considering I have a background outside of the arts) and also introduces me to an extensive network and community of artists with whom to interact during and, more importantly, after I finish the program.
Why did you choose the Clark MFA in Visual Arts over other possible options?
I like the way the program is divided into two residencies with independent work. During the residency, I focus entirely on community and feedback for my work. Then, during the independent studio, I can slowly develop my ideas with the help of both my studio and research mentor. Additionally, after looking at several programs, I was very attracted to the environment at Clark, with the faculty and other students, where ideas flow without judgment and everyone is on the lookout to help each other succeed.
What would you tell a friend who is considering the program?
The Clark MFA program offers you a comprehensive academic background, helps you develop your artistic practice with a research focus, and immerses you in a supportive community.
