What courses should I take in my first year to see if this is the right major for me?
MATH 120, MATH 121, or their honors equivalents: MATH 124 or MATH 125. You can also take one of the math FYI courses such as MATH 112 or MATH 113.
Are there any courses I am required or strongly encouraged to take in my first semester if I know I want to declare this major? Do any AP credits count for these requirements?
We highly recommend you take either MATH 124 (preferable) or MATH 120 in your first semester. If you received a 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam, which counts for MATH 120, it is recommend that you take MATH 121 or MATH 125 in your first semester. If you received a 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam, which counts for both MATH 120 and MATH 121 (but as a half unit each), we recommend you take a different MATH course to get a sense of what the major offers in your first semester.
What is the latest semester that I can start this major and still graduate in four years?
Sophomore year. The major requires 12 courses to be fulfilled, and it will be difficult to complete the major if you have not completed the MATH 120/121 courses before Junior year.
I am interested in many different subjects. What other majors, minors, or concentrations go well with this major?
Economics, Physics, Computer Science, Data Science, Finance, and Accounting all complement our major.
What else do you want incoming first year students to know about this major?
Mathematics complements the above majors very nicely, in addition to being a stand-alone major.
