History

What courses should I take in my first year to see if this is the right major for me?

We recommend that you take a History First-Year Intensive course, or any of the introductory courses within the major.

Are there any courses I am required or strongly encouraged to take in my first semester if I know I want to declare this major? Do any AP credits count for these requirements?

This major does not require you to take any specific courses in your first semester, but we do encourage you to register for any of our introductory courses!

As to any AP exams counting for credit within the History major, the AP US History exam counts for HIST 011 with the necessary score.

What is the latest semester that I can start this major and still graduate in four years?

The history major requires you to take 12 courses, so we recommend that you declare your major no later than the second semester of your sophomore year.

I am interested in many different subjects. What other majors, minors, or concentrations go well with this major?

History majors double major or minor in a variety of disciplines from Economics and Political Science to Studio Art, Art History, and Screen Studies. No field is incompatible with a History major.

What else do you want incoming first year students to know about this major?

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to History faculty with any questions about specific courses or the major. We are happy to talk about our Honors program and our funding to support summer internships.

If I want to declare this as a major, who should I talk to and where do I go?

You can meet with any of our excellent faculty by coming to our department offices on the 3rd floor of the Jefferson Academic Center. You can also learn more by visiting our website here.
