Asian Studies
What courses should I take during the first year to see if this is the right major for me?
We recommend taking a language course or a 100-level course that will count toward the major, such as JAPN 110, PSCI 179, or HIST 171, all of which are offered in the Fall semester. It is not required that students take a course in the first year.
Are there any courses I am required or strongly encouraged to take in my first semester if I know I want to declare this major? Do any AP credits count for these requirements?
No required courses in the first semester. Students who wish to get a head start on language acquisition can take Japanese 101 or Chinese 101, especially if they would like to study abroad your Junior year.
Getting a 4 or 5 on the Chinese or Japanese Language and Culture AP exams can count as credit for this major.
What is the latest semester that I can start this major and still graduate in four years?
Fall semester of your second year, as this major requires 10 courses to be completed along with a complementary second major, minor or concentration. It is also important to declare in your sophomore year as the major requires you to study abroad, which you need to plan a year in advance.
I am interested in many different subjects. What other majors, minors, or concentrations go well with this major?
The Asian Studies major can go well with the programs of History, Economics, Political Science, English, Art History, Sociology, and Screen Studies.
What else do you want incoming first year students to know about this major?
Asian Studies is an excellent fit for students interested in studying abroad in Japan, China, South Korea, or another Asian country. All credits taken abroad will count toward the major.
If I want to declare this as a major, who should I talk to and where do I go?
If you are ready to declare Asian Studies as your major, you can reach out to the Program Director, Suzanne Scoggins.
