Students design a gallery’s new identity

Students in Professor Sherry Freyermuth’s Identity in Practice course designed competing logo concepts for the Harold Stevens Gallery, a community arts space just steps from campus. The project was a full creative cycle: research, design, client presentation, a public exhibition where gallery visitors voted on their favorites, and even a press release the students wrote and distributed themselves.
Sophie Lee ’26 won the popular vote with a typography-driven design built on overlapping letters. “I am 100 percent a better graphic designer than I would’ve been before I took this class,”says Beverly Peterson ’26, one of several students who designed for the project. For a gallery born from a community radio station’s history, the collaboration was as much about honoring a legacy as building a new one.
