Movement is one of the oldest forms of human artistic expression and one of the most immediate. The dance minor at Clark offers a serious, technically grounded introduction to contemporary dance practice for students across all majors, combining physical training with creative exploration and performance.
Offered through the theater arts program, the minor provides a foundation in modern and jazz techniques alongside exposure to a genuinely diverse range of forms — from choreography and improvisation to tap, African dance traditions, and repertory performance. Six courses are required, chosen in consultation with a theater arts faculty advisor to reflect each student’s interests and goals. Five electives are drawn from the dance curriculum, and the minor concludes with the theatre capstone.
Dance at Clark is not confined to the studio. Students pursuing a minor have opportunities to perform and choreograph throughout the year with Dance Society, Variant Dance, and Hip Hop Collabo — three student groups that bring dance into campus life in distinct ways and provide the kind of regular performance experience that develops artists.
The minor complements a wide range of primary majors. Students interested in theater, music, screen studies, or visual arts will find that dance training deepens their understanding of the body in performance and expands their creative range. It is also an asset for students considering careers in arts education, arts administration, and the broader performing arts world.
