Who are you/What do you do?

I am Rochelle Johnson, and I use oil paints to depict my lived life journey as a Black woman living in the 21st century.

What are your career aspirations/what motivates you?

I would love to showcase my work in museums and galleries. The thing that motivates me the most is that I hope to inspire the next generation of artists by placing in their minds that becoming an artist can help to start a discourse about any subject without fear of consequences.

How does the MFA in Visual Arts help you reach your objectives?

The MFA in Visual Arts allowed me to think critically. This allowed me to see the world without rose-colored glasses.

Why did you choose the Clark MFA in Visual Arts over other possible options?

I was captivated by the faculty and was looking to get out of my region and focus on work that did not solely consist of observational painting. I was looking for something that would allow me to go deep within myself.

What would you tell a friend who is considering the program?

I would tell a friend interested in the program to be prepared to allow the process to challenge you. It’s okay to grow.
