As a dual-citizen, and a history major, Linus Isaacs ’26 always felt a deep connection to German cultural studies, so he chose to study abroad in Berlin. A major highlight of the experience for him was simply walking around the city at night with friends.

Study abroad glossary
Clark affiliated program
Programs that Clark has vetted and approved. Students earn Clark credit but pay tuition directly to the provider, as of Fall 2026.
Direct enroll
These programs offer course flexibility for non-traditional majors, a wide range of country options, and affordable tuition. Administered directly by a host university, they are designed to integrate Clark students into the institution and culture.
Exchange program
A reciprocal study abroad program where students from Clark study at a partner institution while students from that institution study at Clark. Students typically pay Clark tuition.
For a non-exchange program, not based on reciprocal exchange. Students pay program-specific tuition directly to the provider. This includes Clark-approved and non-Clark-approved programs.
Homestay
A housing option where students live with a local host or host family in the country where they are studying abroad. Homestays provide cultural immersion, opportunities to practice the local language, and insight into daily life. Meals and utilities are often included, and living arrangements vary by program.
Hybrid program
A study abroad program that combines elements of different program types, typically blending direct enroll (taking courses at a local university) with study center components (such as academic support, on-site staff, or specialized courses). Hybrid programs are often designed to assist students studying in non-English-speaking countries by providing additional language support, cultural programming, or tailored academic resources.
ISEP Exchange | ISEP Direct
ISEP is a global exchange network. ‘Exchange’ students pay Clark tuition; ‘Direct’ students pay program tuition.
May term
A Clark faculty-led study abroad program offered during the month of May, where students engage in intensive, place-based learning by using the host location as a living textbook. These short-term programs combine classroom instruction with experiential activities, site visits, and cultural immersion.
Semester program
A study abroad program that runs during either the fall or spring semester, allowing students to take a full course load abroad for one academic term while earning Clark credit. Semester programs are classified as either exchange (where students pay Clark tuition) or non-exchange (where students pay program-specific tuition directly to the provider), and this classification determines the financial requirements and billing arrangements.
