Clark celebrated the launch of the School of Climate, Environment, and Society with an all-day kickoff event on Monday, Sept. 15, including opportunities to learn about new academic offerings, explore local nature, and engage in fun activities and workshops.

On the ASEC patio, President David Fithian ’87 and School of Climate, Environment, and Society Dean Lou Leonard delivered remarks about Clark’s renewed commitment to sustainability, with a tree planting and “dirt cup” refreshments.

Ruby Lichtman ’27 and Zach Rutherford ’27, members of Clark Environmental Action, spoke about sustainability on campus.
Melissa Ahlgren led a workshop to make sun prints, also known as cyanotypes — photographic prints with a distinct blue color.

In Red Square, the Clark Environmental Action club hosted environmental “Jeopardy!”

Geography Professor John Rogan led a walking tour of the Hadwen Arboretum in the morning.

Students learned about the new environmental humanities concentration from Language, Literature, and Culture Professor Christina Gerhardt, English Professor Stephen Levin, and History Professor Nana Kesse.

The day concluded with a walk at Coes Pond led by Sustainability and Social Justice Professor Morgan Ruelle, to watch various species of bats feed and drink.
