Combined Languages, B.A.

As a combined languages major, you’ll study two or more of the languages offered at Clark. Working closely with a faculty adviser, you’ll design a course of study that develops both your language proficiency and your understanding of the cultures, histories, and literatures where those languages are spoken.

Every student includes Spanish or French as one of their languages, paired with a second language such as Arabic, ASL, Chinese, German, Hebrew, Japanese, or Latin. Students may not combine more than three languages total.

Core Requirements

• One course in Comparative Literature, normally CMLT 130 – The National Imagination
• Two Related Language Courses. May include a beginning language sequence or two intermediate/advanced courses selected in consultation with your adviser.
  Examples include:
  • ARAB 101–102 Elementary Arabic I–II
  • CHIN 101–102 Elementary Chinese I–II
  • FREN 105–106 Intermediate French I–II
  • GERM 101–102 Elementary German I–II
  • HEBR 101–102 Elementary Hebrew I–II
  • ASL 101–102 (or 1010–1020) American Sign Language I–II
  • JAPN 101–102 Elementary Japanese I–II
  • LAT 101–102 Introductory Latin I–II
  • SPAN 103 Elementary Spanish (Intensive) and SPAN 105 Intermediate Spanish I
• Study Abroad Requirement: At least two units of study abroad in a country or region where one of your target languages is spoken. Courses taken abroad typically count toward your major requirements.
• Upper-Level Coursework: Eight courses split between two different languages (one must be French or Spanish). Typically four courses in each language (a 3/5 split may be approved by your adviser). Courses begin at FREN 120 or higher, SPAN 131 or higher, or intermediate level (103 and above) for Chinese, German, Hebrew, Japanese, or Latin. One of the eight courses must be the capstone.

Double Majors

Students pursuing double majors may design a single capstone that fulfills both majors, with adviser approval. The language portion must demonstrate literary and cultural analysis in at least one language other than English.
