Clark to be well-represented at Eastern Psychological Association conference

Professor Andrew Stewart leads a psychology seminar at Clark University

At the end of February, a cohort of undergraduate and graduate students and faculty from the Hiatt School of Psychology will present their research “focused on the cultural, developmental, and social justice dimensions of human behavior” at the Eastern Psychological Association convention in Boston, according to Professor Andrew Stewart, chair of the Department of Psychology.

“The breadth and depth of research conducted in psychology at Clark is on full display,” Stewart says, “from understanding immigrant and ethnic minority mental health to cognitive developmental work on human memory, bilingualism, and understanding pressing social issues such as political radicalization, support for prison policies, and trauma among survivors of violence, as well as work being done on AI, ADHD, and academic identity. We are exceptionally proud of our department’s representation at the conference, highlighting our focus on cultural, contextual, and critical approaches to human behavior and mental processes.”

Clark students will present on a wide range of subjects, including among others:

  • How first-generation Latino and Latina college students process their roles and experiences, and construct coping strategies
  • Southeast Asian Americans’ experiences with racism and discrimination
  • The association between emotion regulation, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder in BIPOC survivors of rape
  • How an individual’s age at migration impacts their post-migration stress
  • Our ability to distinguish between human-created and AI-generated artworks, and how we shape our visual judgments around art.
  • The human need for physical contact, described as “touch hunger,” and how touch intersects with identity, emotional well-being, and belonging.

The Eastern Psychological Association was founded in 1896 and is the oldest of the regional psychological associations in the United States. The annual meeting showcases the latest advances in professional and scientific work by EPA members and their colleagues.

The Eastern Psychological Association convention will be held at the Westin Copley Place, February 26-28.
