Clark’s physics research lives in the Arthur M. Sackler Sciences Center, along with the math and computer science departments. Our well-equipped teaching laboratories are dedicated to computer simulations, electronics, optics, atomic and nuclear physics, and materials science. Our condensed matter physics research laboratories are equipped with the following:
- A variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM)
- A room temperature STM/atomic force microscope (AFM)
- An x-ray computed tomography (CT) system
- Two scanning electron microscopes (SEMs)
- A SQUID magnetometer
- A low-temperature pulsed magnetic field system
In addition, the research labs also have powerful computers used to control experiments and collect and analyze data. The RISC workstations provide links to supercomputers at other institutions. Students also have access to our electronics and machine shops.

Environmental health and safety training
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety works with the Physics Department to create a safe working environment for students, faculty, and staff.
