SUMMARY:Book Talk with Charlie Scheidt: “Inheritance: Love\, Loss\, and the Legacy of the Holocaust”
DESCRIPTION:10 September 2026 |4:00pm| Higgins LoungeDana Commons \n\n\n\nBook Talk with Charlie Scheidt: “Inheritance: Love\, Loss\, and the Legacy of the Holocaust” \n\n\n\nCommentator: Kat Rohrer (Award winning filmmaker\, who has produced\, written and directed both narrative films and documentaries\, as well as a wide variety of industrial films and commercials.) \n\n\n\nModerator: Rebecca Erbelding (Historian\, educator\, curator\, and archivist at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum) \n\n\n\nCharlie Scheidt was born in New York City to parents who had escaped Nazi-occupied Europe. Growing up in a close-knit\, German-Jewish refugee community\, Charlie witnessed firsthand the traumatic effects of persecution and exile. Following his father’s untimely death\, Charlie stepped in to lead Roland Foods\, the business his parents had founded\, honoring their legacy and growing it into the leading imported specialty food company. After nearly five decades as CEO\, Charlie retired and turned his focus to supporting universities and NGOs that advocate for refugee rights. He and his wife split their time between New York City and Upstate New York\, spending as much time as they can with their children and grandchildren. \n\n\n\nAfter his mother’s death\, Charlie Scheidt discovered a trove of historic documents that set him on a decade-long journey to uncover his family’s hidden past during the Holocaust. Joined by Kat Rohrer\, the granddaughter of a Nazi officer\, Scheidt embarked on a quest to trace his family’s harrowing efforts to escape from Nazi-occupied Europe. As they investigated\, they uncovered stories of survival and loss. Their journey takes them across generations and continents\, revealing a legacy of love\, loss\, and resilience. Grappling with questions about the long-lasting effects of inherited trauma\, the book asks whether it is possible to break free of a familial cycle. Inheritance: Love\, Loss\, and the Legacy of the Holocaust\, rooted in his family’s escape and the lasting trauma that followed\, is a powerful reflection on history’s enduring scars\, the importance of remembrance\, and healing across generations. \n\n\n\nZoom Registration Link \n\n\n\nReception and book signing will follow lecture. \n\n\n\nSponsored by the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies\, Clark University Hillel\, Temple Emanuel Sinai\, and Congregation Beth Israel.

SUMMARY:Conference: Necrogeographies of the Marginal Dead
DESCRIPTION:Clark University’s Kaloosdian/Mugar Chair in Armenian Genocide Studies\, Elyse Semerdjian\, in collaboration with Martin Christ of the University of Erfurt (Germany)\, will host the second of two workshops\, “Necrogeographies and the Marginalized Dead\,” at Clark University on September 17–18. \n\n\n\nThe first workshop was held at the University of Erfurt in May 2025 and was funded by the German Research Foundation through the Max Weber Institute. Building on those discussions\, the second workshop will continue to cross disciplinary and chronological boundaries\, bringing together scholars to examine how marginalized dead have been treated across diverse societies and historical periods. \n\n\n\nParticipants will workshop original research spanning Europe\, the Middle East\, Latin America\, South Asia\, Indigenous communities in the Americas\, and the remains and burial practices of enslaved Africans. Panels will explore topics including the spatial politics of death; necro power and state violence; burial rights and expulsion; genocide and warfare; memory and commemorative practices; and the role of power in the marginalization of the dead. \n\n\n\nPapers presented at the workshop will be collected for publication in a forthcoming edited volume co-edited by Elyse Semerdjian and Martin Christ. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please contact Associate Director of the Strassler Center\, Robyn Conroy at rconroy@clarku.edu. \n\n\n\nSponsored by the Friends of the Robert Aram and Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marian Mugar Professor in Armenian Genocide Studies

SUMMARY:Betrayal or Salvation? Religious Conversion during the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Albert M. Tapper Annual Lecture \n\n\n\nReception at 5:00pm \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Doris Bergen (Professor; Chancellor Rose and Ray Wolfe Chair in Holocaust Studies\, University of Toronto) \n\n\n\nReligious conversion during the Holocaust\, specifically conversion from Judaism to Christianity\, is an uncomfortable topic that has received little scholarly attention. Two widespread assumptions are that conversion was rare (at least official conversion\, as opposed to “passing”) and that it made no difference\, since Nazi antisemitism was based on “race”. This talk revisits those assumptions using a wide array of sources\, most of them personal accounts\, from the time and since\, by Jews and non-Jews. Conversion\, it turns out\, was not rare\, and in certain places and circumstances\, it was a significant factor in the survival of individuals and even families. Should conversion to Christianity therefore be considered as an aspect of rescue? Or is it more appropriately understood as a component of genocide (intentional destruction of a religious or ethnic group “as such”)? \n\n\n\nSponsored by the Albert M. Tapper Charitable Foundation
