Dan Florell, a psychology professor at Eastern Kentucky University whose work focuses on school psychology and the use of technology in mental health services, will explore how thoughtful use of AI can strengthen human expertise and critical thinking rather than quietly replace it.
Dan Florell’s work focuses on school psychology and the use of technology in mental health services. His research and professional interests include artificial intelligence, telehealth, and technology-enhanced behavioral health care. Dr. Florell has written and presented extensively on technology and the future of school psychology and brings both research and applied perspectives to questions about how emerging technologies affect children, adolescents, families, and the professionals who serve them.
Earlier in the day, Dr. Florell will lead a workshop, “Recognizing and Responding to Adolescent Chatbot Relationships,” from 11 a.m. to noon in room 202 of the Shaich Center.
Adolescents are increasingly turning to AI chatbots for emotional support and companionship. This training will explore current research on adolescent chatbot relationships, how to distinguish typical use from patterns that may signal concern, and practical strategies for talking with and supporting young people when AI begins to substitute for healthy human connection.
