**The student is not necessarily the first in their family to go to college as defined above, but typically navigates college like many other first-generation college students due to self-identifying as not having prior exposure to or knowledge of navigating higher institution; e.g., if your parent and/or guardian completed a bachelor’s degree outside of the U.S. or if you have only had close contact with people with minimal college experience.
