October 3, 2018, 4:00 p.m., Rose Library, Cohen-Lasry House

Mneesha Gellman, assistant professor of political science at Emerson, will give an HGS “Especially for Students Lecture” on Wednesday, October 3 at 4:00 p.m. in the Rose Library. Her talk “Democratization and Memories of Violence: Ethnic Minority Social Movements in Mexico, Turkey and El Salvador” will be of interest to the CGRAS community. Professor Gellman will focus on the ways that ethnic minority communities use memories of violence in mobilizations for cultural rights, particularly the right to mother tongue education. She will explore how violence-affected communities use memory-based narratives in order to shame states into cooperating with claims for cultural rights protections, and show that shaming and claiming is a social movement tactic that binds historic violence to contemporary citizenship.
