For Indigenous and other frontline communities whose land rights are not protected, the principle of free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) represents a critical tool for ensuring they have a say in whether and how mining or other large-scale infrastructure projects moves forward in their territories. With climate action driving unprecedented growth in demand for minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, and copper, Oxfam America researched the publicly available policies of 42 companies engaged in the exploration and production of these five transition minerals. Scott A. Sellwood, a senior program advisor for extractive industries at Oxfam America, will introduce this research agenda in more depth, present the preliminary findings, and invite a discussion on the implications that can be drawn from it for climate and natural resource justice efforts.
