This summer’s program will run from Tuesday, May 30, to Friday, July 21 (Mondays through Fridays), and research continues throughout the 2023-24 academic year via weekly meetings, sporadic presentations, and thesis composition (students enroll in a directed research credit for Fall 2023 and Spring 2024).

Compensation

HERO Fellows are awarded a $3,500 stipend for the eight weeks of full-time research and also receive academic credit during the year. Additionally, HERO Fellows have many opportunities for publications, presentations, honors, and awards, as well as funding for attendance to present their research at the American Association of Geographers (AAG) annual scholarly meeting to an audience of like-minded scholars and professionals.

How to Apply

Based on a competitive application process, each year the HERO program selects a diverse group of undergraduate students to be HERO Fellows. HERO values students who demonstrate energetic and inquisitive minds, and who are fearless when charting new intellectual territory. Previous course work in research methods (Geog 141 or equivalent), and human or environmental geography — such as urban and population studies, GIS, landscape ecology, land-use planning, statistics and remote sensing — is helpful but not required. There is no minimum GPA or required class standing, but evidence of outstanding scholarly and professional potential is essential. Students must also still be enrolled full time as undergraduates during the Fall semester following the summer program.

Application

Students must complete the online application, including the names of two Clark faculty members as references, a copy of an unofficial academic transcript, and a personal statement essay (three pages maximum) for submission.

Applications and details for HERO (Summer 2024) will be posted late in the Fall 2023 semester.
