Alexandra Gray ’17

Artist Statement

The Affliction Series is a response to the mirage of health issues all diagnosed within the span of one year. The four embroidered figures symbolize each of my diagnoses: vulvodynia, tinnitus, celiac disease, and a sinus infection. Creating this work helped me cope with the realities of having chronic illnesses, some of which are misunderstood or taboo, and the accompanying feelings of isolation and despair. The slow and methodical act of embroidery allowed me to sew my diagnoses into reality.
