NameCoach logoNameCoach is software that allows all members of the Clark community to record the pronunciation of their names, and listen to the correct pronunciation of other Clarkies.

Margo Foreman, Clark’s Vice President and Chief Officer of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, strongly recommends all Clarkies to record their name in NameCoach to ensure all people on campus are respected. Vice President Foreman suggests,

“I encourage every student to utilize the NameCoach app to record their name. As a matter of pride and in order for others to respect the uniqueness of your name and its pronunciation, please slowly annunciate your name to help others discern how to appropriately articulate it.

I suggest users break the pronunciation of their names down by syllable or phonetically then, repeat it fluidly but not fast.”

Recording your pronunciation in Canvas is quick and easy, and will allow your pronunciation to be available across the NameCoach system – including in your Canvas courses, in Outlook, and in your NameBadge.

  1. Log into Canvas using your Clark University credentials.
  2. From your Canvas Dashboard, click Account from the menu bar on the left.
  3. Click on “Name Coach.”
  4. On the upper half of the screen, click “Record Name.”
  5. Name Coach will give you three options for your name recording.
    • Phone: Enter your phone number. You will receive a phone call from an automated number, which will prompt you to record your name. This recording will be used as your name pronunciation.
    • Web Recorder:  Follow the prompts from your internet browser to allow the use of your computer’s microphone.
    • Uploader: Follow prompts to to upload an audio file (e.g. .mp4) that you have previously created to use as your name pronunciation recording.
  6. Click “Submit and Finish.”

Please note that if you have a guest account (in the format firstname.lastname@clarku.edu), you may receive an error when attempting to log into Canvas. If this happens, please contact the Help Desk (helpdesk@clarku.edu, 508-793-7745) for more support.

  1. Click here and use your Clark account to login.
  2. Choose My NameBadge from the top menu.
  3. Choose the Update button under your name

  1. Click here and use your Clark account to log into NameCoach.
  2. Scroll to the bottom
  3. Choose “Add Namebadge to your Email Signature”
  4. Choose the display option you prefer (button with no text, button with text, or just a link that you can add as a link to any text)

  1. Open your email signature, and paste your Name Badge.

Please note that if you have a guest account (in the format firstname.lastname@clarku.edu), you may receive an error when attempting to log into NameCoach. If this happens, please contact the Help Desk (helpdesk@clarku.edu, 508-793-7745) for more support.

  1. Log into Canvas using your Clark University credentials.
  2. From your Canvas Dashboard, select any of your active Canvas courses.
  3. In the course navigation menu, click on “Name Coach.”
  4. A list of other people in the same Canvas course will appear. If they have recorded name pronunciations, they will be listed under the “Recorded Names” tab.
  5. To listen to the pronunciation, click on the purple button to the right.

 

We recommend using the NameCoach plugin with Office/Outlook 2021 or Outlook Online.

  1. Log into your Email in either Outlook 2021, or Outlook Online
  2. Open an email
  3. Locate the NameCoach plugin
    • In Outlook 2021, look for the NameCoach icon on your menu bar/ribbon
      • If it’s not available, you may need to add it, or make it visible. Please contact the Help Desk for more support

    • In Outlook Online, click on the ellipses (three dots) within the email. Scroll down to see the NameCoach icon.

  1. From the dropdown, choose the name of an email recipient.
    • If the user has a recording in Name Coach, you can click the play button to hear the user pronounce their name.
    • If the user hasn’t recorded their name, you will see both of their names, and have the ability to listen to library recordings of other users with the same name.
