The Friends of Goddard Library are proud to sponsor the following talk by Dr. Janette Greenwood.

Did you know

— that early baseball in Massachusetts was played on a rectangular infield and that the first team to score a hundred runs won the game?

— that Worcester hosted a major league team in the 1880s?

–the Blackstone Valley was home to some of the game’s legendary stars?

–that Worcester had a semi-pro Black baseball team?

In anticipation of the WooSox’s inaugural season, Professor Janette Greenwood will discuss these topics as well as other aspects of Worcester’s rich baseball history, drawing on the research that she and her students have done over the years.  She will also explore how baseball history reflects larger trends in American society.
