Barry Hoffman Nazi Postcard Collection

Werner von Axster-Heudtlaß

Accession Number: 2022.02.8.12

Stamp: The stamp is pre-printed on and from the Winterhilfswerk collection. It features a sailing ship design and has a face value of 6+4 pfennigs.

The postcard lacks any printed or handwritten text, only the word “Postkarte” on the top right of the postcard.

The illustration is of deep-sea fishermen with the signature of Axster-Heudtlass on the bottom right corner of the illustration. This is likely Werner von Axster-Heudtlaß (1898-1949), an illustrator who founded the von Axster-Heudtlass advertising graphics studio with his wife Maria von Axster. Werner’s brother, Willy Heudtlass, was also a collaborator. This graphic studio printed a number of stamps and one collection specifically had a surcharge for the Wintershilfswerk.
