- enrolled in or applying to a graduate degree program in an accredited American college or university located within the US
- formal study must include a modern language other than English and the study of an area and culture.

Description
The National Security Education Program David L Boren Graduate Fellowships enable U.S. graduate students to pursue specialization in area and language study or to add an international dimension to their education. Boren Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. national security but are less frequently studied by U.S. graduate students, i.e., areas of the world other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It is hoped that recipients of Boren Fellowships will comprise an ever-growing cadre of experts whose enriched educational and professional experiences will enable them to provide leadership and direction in our national commitment to economic growth, international peace and security, and the promotion of democracy abroad.

Award
Awards are made for a minimum of one and a maximum of six academic semesters (24 months). Overseas study is based on program expenses for a maximum of $10,000 per semester for up to two semesters. The level of support for domestic study is flexible depending on the individual requirements of each applicant. The total maximum level of support for a combined domestic and overseas program is $28,000.
