About Campus Digest

Purpose, Policies and Guidelines

Campus Digest is an internal communications vehicle for Clark University . Its priorities are to inform a diverse faculty and staff of University news, upcoming events, and the personal and professional accomplishments of faculty and staff. It serves as an important vehicle for general news and announcements from the Human Resources Office. Campus Digest also communicates work-related announcements from departments on campus, and may include general announcements from a variety of campus sources that may be of special interest to members of our community.

It's important to note that Campus Digest will not run announcements submitted by alumni, unless they are regarding Clark-sponsored activities; nor will it run announcements from businesses, agencies, organizations, or persons not affiliated through partnership or sponsorship with the Clark family.

Currently, Campus Digest is divided into the following categories:

  • University News
  • Upcoming Events
  • Faculty Notes
  • Staff Notes
  • Human Resources News
  • Department Bulletins
  • Of Special Interest
  • Marketplace

At the discretion of the Campus Digest editor, news and announcements submitted to campusdigest@clarku.edu :

  • May be revised and/or edited for clarity, grammar and Clark style
  • Will be assigned a category (listed above)
  • Will be assigned an issue date*
  • May be chosen to be featured as front-page news**

* Duplicate entries
Clark is a vibrant campus and has a lot going on. It is at the editor's discretion to capture this and to be fair to everyone who would like news coverage or placement of an announcement. Because many on campus have expressed that they don't have time to sift through duplicate messages, another priority is to refrain from frequently repeating the same message. In meeting this priority, the editor tries not to run an item more than once per month (or no more than every other week).

** Front-Page News
Typically, the front-page story position is reserved for a news-related item (generally something that falls under the categories University News, Faculty Notes or Staff Notes), or for a predetermined message from a senior Clark administrator. On occasion, a Clark event is also considered news and may run in this spot at the discretion of the editor.

Photos
You are welcome to submit a digital photo with your news or announcement—JPEGs only, low resolution is preferred. However, submitting a photo does not guarantee inclusion. We will not run PDFs (of flyers or brochures, for example).

Announcements Seeking Human Subjects for Research
Campus Digest will run announcements for faculty, staff and students who are seeking human subjects for research, provided the project has been approved by the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research's Internal Review Board (IRB), which is responsible for ensuring that research conducted by faculty, staff and students protects the rights and welfare of human subjects.

To place an advertisement seeking human subjects for research in Campus Digest, send the IRB-approved ad copy electronically to campusdigest@clarku.edu. Submitters must also send/deliver a hardcopy of the research project's IRB approval to Campus Digest Editor Tammy Griffin-Kumpey. Regrettably, advertisements will not run in Campus Digest until the editor has received the official IRB documentation of approval.

For more information about research compliance, visit http://www.clarku.edu/offices/research/index.cfm or contact IRB Chair Linda Kennedy at 7476.

University News —This category includes significant news items of broad appeal and those that connect with the University's signatures; "Clark in the News" media hits; and periodic messages from senior leadership. The editor will coordinate with the media-relations office to help pinpoint these stories.

Upcoming Events —Clark-sponsored events of broad appeal will run here one to two weeks prior to the event date at the discretion of the editor. "This Week at Clark " will provide a link to the online calendar for a full list of events. At the discretion of the editor, significant events may also run in advance (one to three weeks before the event date) under "University News." Non-Clark events are not specifically promoted through Campus Digest; however we do support and promote the Social Web, which lists a wide range of Worcester area events.

Faculty Notes —Faculty accomplishments; text should be composed and submitted to campusdigest@clarku.edu by the faculty member or his/her department.

Staff Notes —Staff accomplishments; text should be composed and submitted to campusdigest@clarku.edu by the staff member or his/her department.

Human Resources News —This section is managed by the Human Resources Office. It includes messages of general interest to all employee groups. Although it is not HR's policy to market for outside vendors, at the discretion of the human resources director, notices of special discounts or programs that provide a benefit for Clark employees, such as discounts or coupons, may be posted. Also included here, are messages that provide information to employees about policies or procedures, such as changes in HR or payroll policies. Announcements/messages that fall in this category should be submitted to the Human Resources Office.

Department Bulletins —This section is for business- or work-related messages or announcements to faculty and staff from a Clark Department.

Of Special Interest —This section is for announcements from a Clark employee or department that may be of interest or benefit to broad or select Clark audiences, such as Yoga classes for faculty and staff, free sports clinics for kids offered by Athletics, etc. These announcements are typically not work related.

Marketplace —This section is to promote the Marketplace on Clark Commons, a free forum for Clark employees who would like to advertise personal items they would like to sell, rent or give away. Items will be posted in a special section on Clark Commons Intranet and once in the "Marketplace" category in Campus Digest. In providing this forum space, any and all communications and transactions are between the buyer and seller, not Clark University or the University Communications Office. Clark University is not responsible for any item advertised, its representation, sale, or any guarantees or implied warranties that may be attached to the item by the seller. The weekly schedule of vendors and artisans selling wares on the University Center Concourse is also listed here.
