Transforming Landscapes from the Amazon to India
Worcester, Mass. - Clark University Graduate School of Geography's Wallace W. Atwood Lecture Series will present "Transforming Landscapes from the Amazon to India," by Ruth DeFries, professor at the University of Maryland.
This free, public lecture will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the Grace Conference Room of the Higgins University Center, 950 Main Street.
A colloquium on "Reducing Carbon Emissions from Deforestation: Science Meets Policy" will follow at noon, Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Room 218 of the Jefferson Academic Center.
DeFries' research has focused on relationships between human activities, the land surface, and the biophysical and biogeochemical processes that regulate the Earth's habitability. Her research also includes the remote sensing of land cover change at regional and global scales to assess the consequences for ecosystem services.
DeFries obtained a Ph.D. from the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor's degree from Washington University with a major in earth science. Before teaching at the University of Maryland, she worked at the National Research Council with the Committee on Global Change and taught at the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay.
The Wallace W. Atwood Lecture Series honors the founder and first director of the Graduate School of Geography and President of Clark University (1921-46). The series annually presents eminent speakers in the field of geography.
