Worcester, Mass. - The Clark University International Studies Stream (ISS) program, Government and International Relations Department, and Praxis will present a free, public lecture titled, "Russia: Between Stability and Succession Crises," by Boris Kagarlitsky, a fellow at the Transnational Institute (TNI) and coordinator of the TNI Global Crisis project, beginning at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, in Room 218, the Jefferson Academic Center.
Kagarlitsky is the director of the Institute of Globalization and Social Movements in Moscow. He is the author of "Russia under Yeltsin and Putin: Neo-Liberal Autocracy" (TNI/Pluto 2002) and "New Realism, New Barbarism: The Crisis of Capitalism" (Pluto 1999). He won the Deutscher Memorial Prize for his book, "The Thinking Reed: Intellectuals and the Soviet State" (Verso 1988). He writes regularly for The Moscow Times and Eurasian Home.
Kagarlitsky was a student of art criticism and was imprisoned for two years for "anti-Soviet" activities related to his editorship of a samizdat (self-published) journal, Leviy Povorot. He was coordinator of the Moscow People's Front between 1988 and 1990, and also advised the Workers' Committee of Prokpievsk and Karaganda during this period. He was a deputy to the Moscow City Soviet between 1990-93, during which time he was a member of the executive of the Socialist Party of Russia, co-founder of the Party of Labour, and adviser to the chairperson of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia.

Praxis describes itself as "a loosely organized, democratic collective dedicated to action for social change. The aim is to cultivate critical thinking, increase sensitivity to, and develop a spirit of inquiry on important local and global issues. Praxis is not a membership organization, club, or political party."
The Transnational Institute is an international think tank for progressive politics. Established in 1974 as the international program of the Washington, D.C.-based Institute for Policy Studies, the institute is aligned with no political party.
