Clark University receives $10 million gift for new institute

Worcester, Mass. - Clark University announces the creation of the Mosakowski Institute, funded by a gift of $10 million from William S. and Jane Rossetti Mosakowski. Mr. Mosakowski is a Clark Trustee and CEO of Public Consulting Group, Inc., in Boston. The Mosakowskis are dedicated Clark alumni with a long and generous history of giving.

The Mosakowskis' gift – the largest single gift ever presented to the University—will help to close the gap between research and practice, and promises to improve government effectiveness through mobilization of rigorous use-inspired research. The Mosakowski Institute will support research on major issues of social concern, drawing on the widely recognized expertise of Clark faculty in such fields as economic development, environmental sustainability, and education reform.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Lawrence L. Landry made the announcement at the fall Board meeting Friday morning (Oct. 20), saying the new research institute will offer new ways for Clark to "organize our faculty research activities and provide new opportunities for undergraduate and graduate research."

In brief remarks to fellow Board members, Mr. Mosakowski stressed his pride in the University and the role of the Board in addressing the school's financial resources needs. "I've seen the donations and contributions made to this University and I've seen what they have done," he said, mentioning his eight-years' experience on the Board. "This gift is an expression not only of my admiration, but of my confidence in a University that has changed before my eyes in the last eight years."

In addition to a new professorship, and substantial research funds to support both students and faculty who complete the Institute's projects, the endowment will fund publication of white papers and public reports, as well as seminars and symposia for experts in both the academic and applied roles, for addressing major social challenges.

"This splendid gift from a wonderful couple directly supports Clark's mission to 'make a difference' in our world through research and through transformative education for our students," said Clark President John Bassett.

In 1986, Mr. Mosakowski established PCG, a consulting firm that has grown into a thriving organization with hundreds of professionals located in 22 offices nationwide. PCG specializes in strategic public policy, financial, and operations management consulting to government and health-care clients throughout the United States.

Mr. Mosakowski, who grew up in Grafton, graduated from Clark in 1976 with a B.A. in Government and International Relations. Mrs. Mosakowski received a B.A. in English from Clark in 1975. She earned a graduate degree in Library Science from Simmons College in 1979.

The Mosakowskis' commitment has made an impact at Clark in many ways through the years, including the "Mosakowski Challenge" to Clark Fund donors. In 2000, Mr. Mosakowski partnered with Clark's Graduate School of Management to offer an on-site MBA program to employees at PCG. In 1999, the couple created the William B. and Dorothy E. Mosakowski Endowed Scholarship fund in honor of Mr. Mosakowski's parents. Dorothy Mosakowski worked at Clark for 30 years, many as coordinator of Rare Books and Special Collections in the Goddard Library.

The Mosakowskis reside in Swampscott, MA. They have two children, Rachel and Nicholas.
