Hao Xin (ES&P '10)

Hao Xin (ES&P '10) came to ES&P seeking a multi-disciplinary approach to studying the environment, something he saw as valuable in an environmental education.

Hao explains,

I understood that not all environmental problems can be solved through science and technology. Rather, I realized that environmental management standards, cultural atmosphere, and equitable access to information about the environment in today's world are essential factors influencing the future development of the environment.

Hao's experience in IDCE has transformed his perspective and informed his research on the role of NGOs, not only in reducing environmental hazards, but also in enhancing community development. Hao started an environmental NGO in China eight years ago.

After taking IDSC Professor Jude Fernando's course on the management of NGOs, Hao began to understand the development history of NGOs around the world. Hao says he has systematically learned how to build a team, generate public relations, communicate with the government, fundraise, and take advantage of all forms of media. This type of integrated approach will help Hao grow his organization into a powerful community development tool.
