Dean of Research
Nancy Budwig serves the University as Associate Provost and Dean of Research. Her research responsibilities include leadership in developing the research mission of the University. Major responsibilities include: managing the OSPR staff; promoting faculty research; and oversight of regulatory compliance including human participants, environmental health and safety, patents and copyrights, and the University’s conflict of interest policy. The Dean of Research is the authorized signatory for all sponsored programs and research at the University and provides final approvals on major budget related matters.
In her role as Dean of Research, Dr. Budwig works closely with the Corporate and Foundation Relations office in University Advancement and the OSPR on obtaining external funding. Dr. Budwig also works closely with the Provost on strategic initiatives and implementation plans for Clark’s research centers and institutes.
Susan C. Puryear
Director of Sponsored Programs and Research
The Director assists the Dean of Sponsored Research in both working with the University community to obtain and administer external support for research, as well as managing the OSPR. The Director’s responsibilities include the stewardship of federal grants for University signature programs, review and approval of grants and contracts, sponsored research opportunity development, support of faculty research through assisting in the identification of funding opportunities and strategic collaborations, and providing education and support services throughout the granting process from application to award management. Susan continues to work in developing policies and procedures for grant-related compliance, as well as developing, reviewing, and negotiating research-related contracts.

Assistant Director of Sponsored Programs and Research
The Assistant Director is the first point of contact for grant-related matters in the office from pre-award to post-award. She is responsible for the day to day operations of the OSPR assisting with obtaining and administering external research support, reviewing grant and contract project budgets, coordinating all electronic submissions, interfacing with accounting on grant financial matters, and reporting on key indicators of grant activity.

Office Assistant/IRB Coordinator, Office of Sponsored Programs and Research
The Assistant is the first point of contact for IRB related matters and is responsible for overseeing the organization of proposal submissions and the meetings of the IRB. Additionally, Diane processes research related Non-Employee Affiliations, provides general office support for grant related activities, assists with reporting on indicators of grant activity and updating website content, and provides staff support for Research Board activities including Faculty Development Fund administration.

Octavia V. Taylor, Grant Support Coordinator
The Grant Support Coordinator will work with OSPR to execute an assessment of current practices of departmental and institute/center grant support staff to help identify areas for professional development as well as best practices, and to develop and implement a plan for providing training and development tools and services in support of these staff and their work with grant seeking faculty.
