Nancy
Budwig
Dean of Research
Nancy Budwig serves the University as Associate Provost and Dean of Research. Her research responsibilities include leadership
in developing the research mission of the University. Major responsibilities
include: managing the OSPR staff; promoting faculty research; and oversight of
regulatory compliance including human participants, environmental health and
safety, patents and copyrights, and the University’s conflict of interest
policy. The Dean of Research is the authorized signatory for all sponsored
programs and research at the University and provides final approvals on major
budget related matters.
In her role as Dean of Research, Dr.
Budwig works closely with the Corporate and
Foundation Relations office in University Advancement and the OSPR on obtaining
external funding. Dr. Budwig also works closely with the Provost on strategic
initiatives and implementation plans for Clark’s research centers and
institutes.
Susan C. Puryear
Director of Sponsored Programs and Research
The Director assists the Dean of Sponsored
Research in working with the University community to obtain and administer
external support for research. The Director’s responsibilities
include the stewardship of federal grants for University signature programs;
sponsored research opportunity development; and support of faculty research
through assisting in the identification of funding opportunities and strategic
collaborations, and providing education and support services throughout the
granting process from application to award management.

Gabe Johnson
Coordinator of Sponsored Programs and Research
The Coordinator is the first point of contact for grant-related matters in the
office. He is responsible for the day to day operations of the OSPR assisting
with obtaining and administering external research support, reviewing grant and
contract project budgets, coordinating all electronic submissions, and
interfacing with accounting on grant financial matters. In addition, Gabe will
help the office move to more automated processes and regular research reporting.
The Coordinator also provides lead staff support for the IRB (Institutional Review Board for Research Involving Human Subjects). He is the first point of contact for IRB related matters and is responsible for overseeing the organization of proposal submissions and the meetings of the IRB.
