Graduate School of Management Profile
Kate Hanley, MBA/MA '12
Hometown: Milford, Massachusetts
Degrees: MBA/MA in Environmental Science and Policy
Two degrees, multiple perspectives
"One of the best things about the program is that you"re immersed in both the environmental and management sides of sustainability," says Kate Hanley, a student in Clark GSOM's dual MBA/MA program in Environmental Science and Policy. "Often there isn"t a clear-cut answer when it comes to sustainability issues, so being able to understand and work with people on both sides is crucial."
In summer 2011, Kate exercised her dual-degree focus as an intern at the William James Foundation, a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C. that facilitates business plan competitions among entrepreneurs focused on social responsibility. Kate surveyed past competition entrants and analyzed their responses, identifying some of the common challenges social entrepreneurs face as well as their shared best practices. "Many have gone on to be very successful, which is inspiring to hear," says Kate. "Their stories illustrate the power and viability of for-profit enterprises with social or environmental missions."
