Detecting and Preventing Plagiarism

March 1, 2006

Plagiarism is a major issue in courses that require writing. Technology makes plagiarism easier than ever before, and many students arriving at Clark don't understand what constitutes plagiarism, and why it is not OK to copy and paste text from a web site. In this session, faculty discussed a variety of approaches to detecting and preventing plagiarism, framed by some brief introductory comments by:

Gwen Arthur (Goddard Library), who discussed the library resources that available to educate students about citing sources appropriately; Judy Miller (CETL), who suggested some strategies for designing assignments that make plagiarism less likely; Cheryl Elwell (ITS), who discussed technological methods for detecting plagiarism; Kevin McKenna (Academic Advising), who reviewed institutional policy and what to do if you suspect plagiarism.
