What to Do in a Medical Emergency at Clark University
It is important to plan ahead prior to having a medical emergency, injury or illness on campus. A good place to start is by researching your health insurance to determine which area hospital(s), or urgent care center(s) are covered under your plan.
Emergencies are life threatening and need immediate evaluation in the emergency department. Some examples of life threatening condition(s) include:
- Marked difficulty breathing
- Loss of consciousness
- Head injury with passing out, fainting or confusion
- Passing out, fainting
- Chest pain/pressure that is new
- Sudden severe pain
- Severe abdominal pain or pressure
- Broken bones
- Bleeding that will not stop
- Seizures
- Fever with headache and stiff neck
- Severe allergic reaction with trouble breathing, swelling, hives
- Coughing or vomiting blood
- Sudden weakness in arm/leg
- Sudden facial droop
- Vision changes that don’t come and go and affect ability to see
- Injury to neck or spine
- Vomiting/diarrhea that does not stop
- Inhaled smoke or poisonous fumes
- Alcohol poisoning or drug overdose
- Thoughts or plan to hurt yourself or others
- Sexual Assault Evaluations

If you have a Medical Emergency and you are on campus, contact Campus Police at 1-508-793-7575. If you are off campus, call 911.
Clark University Health Services is open 9 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday while classes are in session. We are located at 501 Park Avenue. Please call 1-508-793-7467 to make an appointment. Additional information is available on our website. Our nurses can help you decide the proper venue for care if you have questions.
If you have an urgent issue or health question that cannot wait until Health Service reopens, Clark has a doctor- on-call. The doctor-on-call can be reached through Hahnemann Family Health Center by calling 1-508-334-8830. You will be connected with the Answering Service. Identify yourself as a Clark University student, leave your name, phone number and medical problem. The doctor-on-call will call you back in the next hour to discuss your urgent medical problem. The doctor-on-call will assess your problem and give you advice. If you are referred to the emergency room or a local urgent care center, you or your medical insurance are responsible for payment.
Note: Please do not call the doctor-on-call for medication refills, as this is not a reason to use this service.
If you prefer not to access the doctor-on-call, you may go to a local urgent care center. Urgent care centers are listed under local resources on the Clark Health Services website. You or your medical insurance will be responsible for all billing related to your visit.

- Colds
- Coughs
- Flu
- Rash
- Dizziness
- Pink Eye
- Headache
- Sinus pain
- Sore throat
- Ear pain
- Back Pain
- Minor Allergic reactions or asthma
- Sprains/Strains
- Minor broken bones
- Urinary tract infections
- Minor cuts and burns
- Sexually Transmitted Infections
- Other minor injuries

Directions:
Health Services can be reached either from Park Avenue or Birch Street. To get to Birch, take Maywood Street (heading toward Park Avenue) and then turn right onto Birch Street. Follow the signs to the Health Services building.
