Mattie Carroll

Mattie Carroll
Mattie served as the Graduate Assistant to the Integration and Belonging Hub from Fall 2023 – Spring 2025.

Mattie graduated from Clark in May 2025 with a Master’s in International Development and a concentration in Refugees, Forced Migration, and Belonging. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies from College of the Holy Cross in 2019. At Clark, Mattie was a research fellow on the NSF project, “Co-creating Research and Education Capacities to Understand, Visualize and Mitigate Climate-Change Impact Cascades and Inequities in Central Mexico.” As part of this project, she conducted field research in Mexico City, engaging with local communities to explore the impacts of water scarcity on health and livelihoods. During Mattie’s time in Mexico City, she secured a position as a United Nations Volunteer (UNV) with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). In this role, she supported their Migration, Environment, and Climate Change (MECC) team by conducting research in the areas of Disaster Risk Reduction and climate-change adaptation. After returning from Mexico, Mattie’s academic research revolved around the topics of climate-induced displacement and urban integration in Mexico, resulting in a policy brief and research paper (see below). Finally, prior to graduate studies, Mattie served as the Assistant Director of the Donelan Office for Community-Based Learning at Holy Cross for two years, where she facilitated community engagement initiatives between students and non-profit organizations in Worcester. Mattie hopes to pursue a career in the field of non-profit/NGO organizations, particularly at the intersection of forced migration, mobility, and belonging.
