Liberating Language Skills: Critical Pedagogy for Refugee Empowerment in Employment

Speaker Bio

Eliana Stanislawski (they/she) is a seasoned Adult ESOL curriculum designer and instructor who specializes in refugee education. As the Adult Education Curriculum and Instruction Specialist at HIAS Pennsylvania, they designed and instruct an intensive hybrid language course serving newcomer refugees seeking jobs in the United States. They also design other Adult ESOL materials in this role and consult with Social Services staff on community education materials. They are passionate about increasing educational access for adult refugee learners, innovative approaches to virtual learning for adults at all language levels, developing student-centered curricula, and challenging the deficit mindset that is pervasive in Adult ESOL and refugee resettlement work. Eliana obtained an MSEd in TESOL from Temple University and a BA in International Development and Social Change from Clark University.
