Environmental Science and Policy

Research and Active Learning

Students

Read about some of the undergraduates who have engaged in research and internships:

Alejandra JaramilloAlejandra Jaramillo '06, a double major in environmental science and policy and biology, traveled to Alaska and British Columbia to assist conservation efforts designed to protect the threespine stickleback.

The HERO program provides funding for undergraduate research focusing on environmental issues in the Worcester area. Professor Gil Pontius and HERO fellows Jeff Malanson '03, Nicholas Malizia '05, Jamie Mohr '05, Patrick Morris '03, and Jessica Schifano (WPI '05) describe their research goals.

Laran Kaplan and junior Matthew Chmielewski have literally been "getting their feet wet" in Biology 201: Ecology of Atlantic Shores. The course, co-taught by biologists Todd Livdahl and Deborah Robertson, is field based, incorporating trips to Northeastern University's Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts and the Bermuda Biological Station for Research in St. George, Bermuda.

In a interview, Diana Huffaker '03, who studied geography, and Emily Shusas '02, who studied Environmental Science and Policy, discussed their participation in Gil Pontius's research on land use change in Massachusetts.

Rachel Regeczi '03, who studied geography and studio art with a concentration in Environment and Society spent two summers assisting Drs. Rocheleau and Malaret with their bioecology research in New York state's Adirondack region.

Ethan Moore '02 and Professor Dale Hattis collected data for a federally funded project focusing on visitor safety in United States National Parks.

Faculty

Read about the research of some of our faculty:

Environmental science and policy professor Dale Hattis studies the level of cancer risk associated with exposure to a wide variety of chemical substances. He and student Jennifer Ericson worked to compile a related database bringing together research on age-related differences in cancer susceptibility.

Dr. Todd Livdahl studies several types of native and non-native mosquitos competing for habitat space in treeholes and discarded tires.

Environmental analyst Gil Pontius and his students are hot on the heels of the ripple effects of changing land use. Using computers and geographic software, they simulate and make predictions about the environmental impact of land use changes.

Geographer Bill Turner and economist Jackie Geoghegan teamed up to examine the impact of changing land use in Mexico's Southern Yucatán.

Biologist Susan Foster and her students study the threespine stickleback in the lab and in the field. These small fish provide big insights into evolutionary biology.
