Clark University is closed today in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a time to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy of dedication and commitment to justice and equality.

A group of Clark students spent the weekend in Memphis, Tennessee, where they visited key landmarks in the Civil Rights Movement.

Their trip was supported by Clark’s D’Army Bailey Diversity Fund, named for the 1965 Clark alumnus who, among many other things, spearheaded the effort to preserve the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. King was assassinated in 1968. (Bailey’s son, Justin Bailey ’00, met with the students this weekend.)

The students were guided through the city by Carolyn Michael-Banks ’79, who has devoted her career to unveiling the hidden histories of Black America.
