Single-celled cyanobacteria “form an important foundation of life in the oceans,” says Professor Nathan Ahlgren, a microbial ecologist.

They perform photosynthesis, contributing to more than 12 percent of the oxygen we breathe. Yet every day, viruses attack and kill them. Ahlgren and his students want to know why.

By studying water samples gathered from Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island, they hope to better understand what’s happening in this ever-churning ecosystem under the sea. 🌊
