Artist Statement
I am always exploring how I navigate the world as an outsider looking in. My work illustrates past and present relationships, personal experiences, and imagined events. These images consist of abstracted fragmented figures that incorporate transparency and indicate vulnerability that I perceive. My drawings are executed in an intuitive and spontaneous style, as a way for the viewer to experience the emotional impact that I feel. My pieces are done on oversize paper using soft pastel with white oil pastel to enable me to scrape down the work and create layering. The figures are often human scale to engage and confront the viewer.
Artist Biography
Alaine Becker is a tri-state artist working primarily on oversize paper. She has been awarded The New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship and a Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Fellowship. Ms. Becker received both a full fellowship and partial on two separate occasions for a residency to the Vermont Studio Center. Ms. Becker attended a residency at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. She has also had solo exhibitions at Ben Shahn Gallery at William Paterson University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and Sussex County Art Gallery, and the Pierro Gallery in South Orange. Other exhibitions include, The County College of Morris, in Randolph, New Jersey, The Drawing Rooms in Jersey City, The Paul Robeson Galleries at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit, New Jersey, and Seton Hall University Law School in Newark, New Jersey. Publications include: The Exquisite Corpse: The Collaborative Surrealist Drawing Game; New Drawing/New Jersey A Statewide Survey Of Contemporary Drawings, The Drawing Rooms, Victory Hall Press; Mostly Drawing, A journal of Current Drawing, The Drawing Rooms, Victory Hall Press; Exquisite Corpse Paul Robeson Gallery 30th Anniversary; and “The Way Things Are” at William Paterson University Art Gallery. Ms Becker holds a BFA from The State University College at Purchase.
