It’s larger and bolder, and is typically reserved for a page’s calls to action. Calls to action are what you want a visitor to do when they come to your page. It might be something like apply, visit, download a file, or contact a person.

A good button will have short text that starts with a verb. Its function should be clear and a reader should feel confident in clicking it. Let’s have a look:

Apply

REgister

Download

Hierarchy

Frequently, a page will have several related calls to action. It’s useful to be able to represent this hierarchy of action visually. Layout is one of the best ways to make the distinction, but below are a few ways to differentiate primary calls from others using button options.

Use Deep Red for the primary action, Warm Gray for secondary, and an even lighter neutral for a tertiary action.

Apply

Register

Download

Connect

Combine filled and outline buttons to draw the reader’s eye to the primary call to action.

Apply

Register

Download

Buttons are a signal to act.
