The Board of Trustees is ultimately responsible for the selection of Clark’s next president. Members of the Board’s leadership team greatly value the participation and input from all stakeholders and conducted an extensive “listening tour” to gather feedback from members of the Clark community — including faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, students, parents, and donors — about their aspirations for the university, the most important objectives to be met under the leadership of the new president, and the qualifications sought in potential candidates. In addition, the Board asked several of these stakeholders to join the Presidential Search Committee.
The committee has been charged with conducting an inclusive global search for the next president, and will identify and interview several of the top candidates. The committee also will recommend a final candidate, as well as at least one qualified additional candidate, to the Board of Trustees. The Board will make the final determination. In fulfilling its charge, the Presidential Search Committee will oversee and be assisted by search consultant Shelly Storbeck of Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates.
The Presidential Search Committee was formed in early May 2019; it anticipates conducting interviews of leading candidates in fall 2019 and completing its work by December. The Board of Trustees expects to name the next president in early 2020, with a plan to have the successful candidate take over the presidency upon David Angel’s retirement at the end of June 2020.
After much discussion with faculty and board leaders, as well as with our search consultant, it was decided that a confidential (“closed”) process would be critical to ensuring a successful search. Confidentiality is now the standard for presidential searches; experience has shown that the best candidates often will not engage in an open or compromised search, and that a closed search would result in the deepest and most diverse pool of top candidates. All members of the Presidential Search Committee have signed a confidentiality agreement.
