{"id":126,"date":"2024-04-15T19:28:50","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T23:28:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.golive.clarku.edu\/president\/2024\/04\/15\/5m-gift-will-support-endowed-professorships-and-athletics\/"},"modified":"2025-03-31T10:42:28","modified_gmt":"2025-03-31T14:42:28","slug":"5m-gift-will-support-endowed-professorships-and-athletics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/president\/2024\/04\/15\/5m-gift-will-support-endowed-professorships-and-athletics\/","title":{"rendered":"$5M Gift Will Support Endowed Professorships and Athletics"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-post-date\"><time datetime=\"2024-04-15T19:28:50-04:00\">April 15, 2024<\/time><\/div>\n\n<p>Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,<\/p>\n<p>I am very pleased to announce a $5 million gift to Clark from the estate of Carl Stuart Klorman \u201971 that we will allocate primarily to endowed professorships to honor Mr. Klorman\u2019s lifelong appreciation for the quality of his education.<\/p>\n<p>First, we will establish the <strong>Carl S. Klorman Professor of Climate Studies<\/strong> within the new School of Climate, Environment, and Society, which we expect will open in fall 2025 and for which we are now searching for the D.J.A Spencer Dean of the School.<\/p>\n<p>Second, we will establish the <strong>Carl S. Klorman Professor of Artificial Intelligence<\/strong>, which may be appointed in any department or school within the University and may focus broadly on machine learning and computational intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Third, we will direct funds from this gift to be used as a challenge grant to complete the funding for the <strong>David P. Angel Professor<\/strong>, an endowed chair first announced in June 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Clark\u2019s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Sebasti\u00e1n Royo, will be responsible for assigning these endowed chairs to current or newly recruited faculty members.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, a portion of this gift will be used this summer to <strong>renovate and reequip the varsity weight room<\/strong> in the Kneller Athletic Center, consistent with Mr. Klorman\u2019s view that education happens both inside and outside the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>I am very grateful to Carl Klorman for his longstanding support of Clark and for this most generous bequest.
