Meet the Staff

The Massachusetts Small Business Development Center Network at Clark University includes a staff of experienced professionals with years of practical business experience in corporate and small business environments. Their work is augmented by qualified graduate student interns and private consultants.

In early December 2017, Richard S. Cheney was appointed Regional Director of the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center (MSBDC) at Clark University. The MSBDC at Clark provides business development advice to clients in the Central Massachusetts region. Mr. Cheney was most recently the Director of Operations for the Graduate School of Business at Bryant University. Previously he was the Associate Director of Continuing Education & Community Engagement at Central Connecticut State University. Mr. Cheney also served as Interim State Director of the Connecticut Small Business Development Center (CSBDC) at the University of Connecticut School of Business. Mr. Cheney’s responsibilities while with the CSBDC included planning, organizing, leading and controlling all aspects of the organization. Mr. Cheney was formerly the CSBDC Associate State Director and Regional Director serving southeast Connecticut. Prior to joining the full time staff of the CSBDC, Mr. Cheney served as the Director of the David Chase Free Enterprise Institute at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic and was the Executive Director of the Northeast Connecticut Economic Alliance. He completed his undergraduate studies at Hobart College in Geneva, New York and earned his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Connecticut in Storrs.

He is a perpetual collaborator, executive coach, and a Chief Problem solver whose mission is to inspire, equip and connect individuals and teams to seize opportunities, face challenges, and accelerate impact in their communities. Tom shares his leadership experience and approach to problem-solving in a variety of ways.

Throughout his career he has followed a high-integrity path of servant-leadership, continually learning from the wisdom around him. He is a consistent, steady, big-picture strategic thinker, with a sharp, tactical focus that generates measurable results. Tom is a thorough planner with a continuous improvement mindset and a process orientation that is based on facts and discernible metrics.

Tom thrives on establishing connections and enjoys building rapport with diverse constituencies to collaborate and achieve dynamic synergy that is based upon mutual trust. Tom’s passion is to empower others to become their very best.

As a senior business adviser, Cheryl provides assistance to start-ups and early stage ventures, including business planning, business and product development, access to capital, marketing, operations, management advice on best practices, and other aspects of running a small business. She also advises clients in business acquisition and turnaround situations. As an adviser, she is able to leverage her knowledge gained through her many years as a lender to small businesses, as well as her education at Bryant University. Additionally, as Training Director, Cheryl facilitates and develops curriculum for the SBDC’s seminars and workshops in financial management, sales and marketing, strategy, and special topics such as social and mobile marketing, which help entrepreneurs develop the skills required to successfully launch and grow their business.

Rob joined the MSBDC in January 2021 as a Senior Business Advisor. Through much of his career, Rob has focused on starting and running businesses. His experience has spanned industries including Insurance, Technology, Consulting, and Coworking. Rob brings a strong understanding of the highs and lows of running a business and truly enjoys working with entrepreneurs to help them through the many challenges they will face while running their own business.

“I have been blessed with the experience of starting three companies. In each, I was one of the founding partners – which means at some point I did everything from making coffee to raising $14M in capital. Having this experience has given me the ability to work across all functional units and truly appreciate all levels of an organization.”

Rob is a perpetual technologist and loves to focus on improving operations by applying technology and workflows to create simple and effective operational solutions. He believes that knowledge of numbers is one of the keys to a business’s continued success and enjoys working with entrepreneurs to transform data into information and help build the tools needed to visualize their trends and successes.
