To the campus community,
In the fall of 2017 Clark University established a Commission on Speech Rights and Community Values. I am very grateful to the students, staff, and faculty who served on the Commission. The Commission was charged with recommending policies and practices to be adopted by the University with respect to freedom of speech and related issues. To this end, the Commission sought input from all Clark University constituencies through a robust process of engagement lasting more than a year that included multiple meetings, fora, and solicited feedback.
The Commission has completed its work, and following approval by the Board of Trustees and faculty governance, we now adopt the statement and policy documents linked below:
- Clark University Statement on Freedom of Expression and Community Values
- Clark University Protests and Demonstrations Policy
- Policies and Procedures for Renting Space to External Groups
The adoption of this formal statement, along with the attendant policies, makes clear the rights and responsibilities afforded to all members of our community. At the same time, it is important that we put these values and aspirations to work positively and productively in the lived experience of the campus. We will seek out opportunities to do so in coming months as we engage with the issues and challenges facing our community and our world.
